General Discussion

Hydrazine reacts with potassium iodate under the usual conditions:

IO3- +N2H4 + 2H+ +Cl- = IC1 + N2 + 3H2O

To determine the N2H4,H2SO4 content of hydrazinium sulphate, use the following method.

Procedure

Weigh out accurately 0.08-0.1 g of hydrazinium sulphate into a 250 mL reagent bottle, add a mixture of 30 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid, 20 mL of water, and 5 mL of chloroform (or carbon tetrachloride). Titrate with the standard 0.025M potassium iodate slowly from a burette, with shaking the stoppered bottle between the additions, until the organic layer is just decolorised.
